Tamil Nadu recorded 4,979 new Covid-19 cases on Sunday, the highest single-day figure yet, leading to figures that the State is witnessing a fresh wave of coronavirus spread.
However, officials have rejected it and said the increase is due to more number of tests in the State. The State has now tested 18,55,817 persons and 19,32,492 samples so far, the highest in India.
The total number of confirmed cases in the State is now 1,70,693 while the toll has risen to 2,481 as another 78 deaths have been recorded. Tamil Nadu also reached a new high in testing, with a whopping 51,640 people and 52,993 samples being tested.
Greater Chennai Corporation Commissioner G Prakash said the city civic body was the first in the country to have conducted five lakh RT-PCR tests.
Till July 18 from March, five lakh tests were conducted, he said adding sample testing has been increased to 13,000 per day from about 4,500 (in recent times) in the Corporation areas.
Of the dead were two men aged 22 and 37 and two 38- year old women and in total 75 had co-morbidities and 2,481 people have so far succumbed to the virus in Tamil Nadu.
Chennai accounted for a fourth of the fresh cases, at 1,254. The total number of cases in the city now stands at 85,859. While 1,189 persons were discharged on Sunday, 15,042 were still under treatment. The city also accounted for 27 of the 78 deaths.
The number of people discharged post-treatment on Sunday was within striking distance of new cases reported with 4,059 discharges taking the total number of discharges to 1,17,915. This leaves only 50,294 active cases in TN.
