Around 100 persons sustained injuries and many of them fell into Cooum river when a wooden bridge at Island Grounds in the city collapsed during ‘Pinkathon’, a marathon event aimed at creating awareness on cancer on Sunday.
“There were around 30 of them crossing the bridge that time, unable to bear the weight the bridge collapsed. And many women fell in the Cooum river,” said a sweeper who along with others present at the venue rushed to their rescue.
The bridge was a connecting link to the parking lot on the other side where the Chennai Book Fair which is being held. Police officers have been deployed near the other two bridges on the Cooum River for safety.
