Nadigar Sangam adopts resolution seeking stricter action against defamation of actors

The South Indian Artistes’ Association, popularly known as Nadigar Sangam, has passed a resolution calling for stricter legal action, including possible jail terms, against individuals found guilty of defaming actors.

The resolution was adopted at the association’s recent general body meeting in Chennai. According to office-bearers, the move comes in response to the growing incidence of online abuse, baseless allegations, and smear campaigns targeting members of the film industry.

“Constructive criticism is welcome, but deliberate defamation has caused severe distress to many artistes. This resolution is meant to ensure accountability,” said a senior member of the association after the meeting.

As part of the resolution, Nadigar Sangam is expected to recommend to the Tamil Nadu government that stricter penal provisions be introduced under existing laws. The suggestion includes jail time for those convicted of intentional defamation through media outlets or social media platforms.

While several artistes welcomed the decision, arguing that actors deserve the same protection from slander as any citizen, legal experts and civil society groups cautioned against criminalizing defamation further.
