“Myyal” Movie Review

Myyal: A Poignant Romance That Elevates a Familiar Tale

Director APG Elumalai’s Myyal is a heartfelt exploration of love blossoming amidst chaos, anchored by genuine performances and an emotionally resonant core. The film opens with Maadasamy, a small-time thief portrayed convincingly by Sethu, as he steals a goat. His path soon crosses with Alli, a mysterious black magic practitioner played by the graceful Samriddhi Tara. What follows is a deeply touching romance that forms the emotional heartbeat of the story.

Sethu and Samriddhi Tara share a natural, unforced chemistry that makes their relationship incredibly watchable. Their moments together are filled with sincerity, free from melodrama or clichés. It’s rare to see a love story unfold so quietly yet so powerfully, and it’s here that Myyal truly shines. The tenderness in their interactions offers a welcome contrast to the grittier aspects of the plot.

As the narrative progresses, the film shifts into a police procedural mode, focusing on a murder investigation, along with themes of corruption and police brutality. While these segments are competently executed, they follow familiar genre tropes and lack the emotional originality of the love story.

Still, the film remains compelling thanks to its strong performances. Sethu brings authenticity to Maadasamy, making his journey believable and compelling. Samriddhi Tara adds nuance and strength to her role, turning Alli into more than just a romantic interest — she becomes a character of substance.

Despite some predictable turns in the investigative plot, Myyal remains engaging throughout. Its decision to highlight personal, emotional stakes over larger societal commentary gives it an intimate quality that feels refreshingly grounded.

In the end, Myyal may follow a familiar route in parts, but it rises above with its touching portrayal of love and the heartfelt performances of its leads. For those seeking a film that balances emotional depth with accessible storytelling, Myyal is a rewarding watch.
