Murders: Chennai police collect details of senior citizens

Close on the heels of the recent murders of two older women, living alone in the city, police have unveiled a list of measures to protect the residents, especially the senior citizens.

To extend security to them, police are updating information about senior citizens, tenants, migrant labours.

Additional commissioner of police, North, C Sridhar said so far, around 4,600 senior citizens had registered.

He said that the senior citizens can contact the toll free number 1253 that was dedicated to receive calls from senior citizens in distress.

He said on an average the department received around 75 calls per day through the toll free number, out of which 70% of the calls were from people seeking medical assistance, and transportation issues.

Commissioner George said, “This measure will help to identify miscreants occupying residential areas under the guise of tenants. Such a system is already in place in Delhi, which serves maintain law and order better and prevent crimes.”
