The award was presented at the Urban Mobility India (UMI) Conference 2025 by the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.

The prestigious national recognition acknowledges MTC’s comprehensive efforts to enhance connectivity, promote digital adoption, and drive green mobility across the city and its suburban regions.

Expanded Network: The corporation was praised for its extensive coverage, operating across 660 routes throughout Chennai and its suburban areas, ensuring last-mile connectivity for millions.

Social Welfare: A significant factor in the win was the successful implementation of the free bus travel scheme for women, which has greatly enhanced accessibility and empowerment. MTC also runs a popular dedicated school bus service scheme.

Digital Transformation: MTC has accelerated the adoption of digital payments by deploying Electronic Ticketing Machines (ETMs) and enabling transactions via the National Common Mobility Card, UPI, and credit/debit cards. Furthermore, the introduction of the Chennai One app has streamlined the commuter experience.

Green Mobility Push: In a strong commitment to environmental sustainability, MTC has begun deploying electric buses, a move that contributes directly to reduced emissions and advances the city’s green mobility objectives.
