Modi urges people to donate organs, says one donor can save upto 9 lives
Prime Minister Narendra Modi Sunday appealed to people to opt for organ donation and said when a person donates one’s body after death, it creates the possibility for eight to nine people to get a new life.
In the 99th edition of his monthly radio address Mann Ki Baat, the Prime Minister said his government was working on a uniform policy to make the process easy and encourage people to adopt the life-saving exercise.
A decision to remove the age criteria of less than 65 years for donating organs has been taken, and the condition of being a state domicile for receiving organs has also been done away with to allow the needy to register themselves anywhere in the country, he said.
“In the midst of these efforts, I urge the countrymen to come forward in maximum numbers for organ donation. One decision of yours can save the lives of many people, can give life,” Modi said.
“It is a matter of satisfaction that the awareness about organ donation is rising in the country… In 2013, there were less than five thousand cases of organ donation in our country; but in 2022, this has increased to more than 15,000,” the Prime Minister said.
