Modi, Myanmar President hold wide-ranging talks in New Delhi, focus on security, trade and connectivity

Prime Minister Narendra Modi held extensive discussions with Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing in New Delhi, with both sides focusing on strengthening cooperation across areas including defence, trade, security, connectivity and regional development.

The meeting marked Min Aung Hlaing’s first visit to India in his current role as President of Myanmar. The visit comes at a time when New Delhi and Naypyidaw are seeking to deepen engagement on strategic and economic issues despite ongoing international scrutiny of Myanmar’s political situation.

According to reports, the talks covered a broad range of bilateral matters, including trade and investment, border management, infrastructure development and regional security cooperation. Both countries also discussed ways to improve connectivity projects that are considered important for linking India with Southeast Asia.

Security issues featured prominently in the discussions. The two sides reviewed cooperation relating to border stability and measures to prevent the use of territory for activities that could threaten either country’s security interests. Myanmar reportedly reiterated its commitment that its territory would not be used against India’s security concerns.

The leaders also examined defence cooperation and exchanged views on regional developments. Discussions reportedly included efforts to strengthen collaboration in sectors such as energy, technology, education and health, alongside initiatives aimed at boosting economic engagement between the neighbouring countries.

Connectivity projects were another major area of focus. Both sides underlined the importance of improving infrastructure and transport links to strengthen people-to-people ties and facilitate trade. Reports indicated that there was an emphasis on accelerating progress on key connectivity initiatives that have strategic significance for the region.
