Cell phones buried under trees were seized in Puzhal Prison. Seven mobile phones were seized from the inmates of Puzhal Central prisons, during a search.
Police said the officials decided to conduct a surprise check based on a tip off that phones had made their way into the prison.
According to sources, Police were probing into the role of the jail officials in smuggling in the cellphones.
Around 30 inmates were quizzed about this and a case has been registered by the Puzhal police.
Earlier this month, at least five mobile phones were seized from terror suspects, including those arrested in connection with the murder of a Hindu Munnani functionary here recently.
