Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg expresses regret over content moderation issues
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has expressed regret for issues relating to child sexual abuse material (CSAM), deepfake content and operational shortcomings on the company’s platforms, reports said, quoting government sources.
Reports said the apology came after concerns were raised by Indian authorities regarding the circulation of objectionable and manipulated content.
Officials also conveyed that a platform which actively determines the distribution of content may not qualify as a neutral intermediary under Indian law. According to the sources, this could affect the availability of safe harbour protections provided under the Information Technology Act.
The sources further claimed Meta acknowledged that money had been spent to promote certain categories of content and expressed regret over the matter.
Earlier in the day, IT Ministry sources said social media platforms, including Meta, are required to comply fully with Indian laws. They also said a parliamentary panel had asked Zuckerberg to issue an unconditional apology within three days over the temporary removal of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Facebook post.
A senior Meta delegation met IT Secretary S. Krishnan in New Delhi regarding the mistaken removal of the Prime Minister’s video and was also scheduled to meet Union Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.
