After seizing close to Rs 180 crore during the raids, the Income-Tax (I-T) Department has started interrogating contractor Nagarajan Seyyadurai of SPK Group to find out details of the unaccounted cash and tax evasion.
Searches on most locations owned by Nagarajan Seyyadurai, the founder of the company, and his close associates and employees.
Seyyadurai’s SPK Group has won over many highway contracts in the last few years, and in March 2018, he incorporated a new company called the SPKAndCo Expressway Private Limited.
Seyyadurai was first quizzed in Chennai and was later brought to Madurai for further inquiries, sources said.
Officials are trying to find out about his business associates in several places in Tamil Nadu.
Seyyadurai is supposed to be close to the current dispensation in Tamil Nadu and had many infrastructure and civil construction contracts in his kitty.
Sources in the IT Department reportedly revealed that money was being siphoned out of the contract payments from the Tamil Nadu government by issuing fake receipts against expenditure.
Sources said the I-T officials received a specific input pertaining to alleged tax evasion which triggered simultaneous search operations in over 40 locations. Preliminary information shared by sources in the I-T Department revealed that officials seized a huge quantity of cash, documents relating to immovable assets across the State, gold bars and storage devices.
