A day after meeting DMDK president Vijayakanth in Chennai and holding ‘crucial talks’, Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president S Thirunavukkarasar has left for New Delhi to meet Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi.
These developments are taking place amid reports that there are strains in the alliance between Congress and DMK.
Thirunavukkarasar met Vijayakanth at the actor-politician’s party headquarters in Chennai on Sunday.
Speaking to reporters later, the TNCC chief described the meeting, which lasted around 30 minutes, as a “courtesy call.”
“It is a friendly meeting. We discussed some common issues. He is a long-time friend of mine,” Thirunavukarasar said. He pointed out that he had been meeting leaders of various political parties after he took charge as TNCC president.
Incidentally, the TNCC is an ally of the DMK, which is opposed to the DMDK.
Earlier in the day, Thirunavukkarasar issued a statement confirming the Congress party’s participation in the rail roko protest organised by various farmers’ association on October 17 and 18 demanding the constitution of the Cauvery Management Board and Cauvery Water Regulation Committee.
