Media and Entertainment Skills Council identifies City-based Shri S.S. Shasun Jain College for Women as a Centre of Excellence

Chennai, 14th November 2018: Media and Entertainment Skills Council (MESC) supported by the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC), Government of India, today (November 14, 2018) signed an MoA (Memorandum of Agreement) with city-based Shri Shankarlal Sundarbai Shasun Jain College for Women to establish Shasun College as a Centre of Excellence in Media, Entertainment & Communication and Art & Culture. Mr. Mohit Soni, Chief Operating Officer , MESC signed the MoA with the Secretary of the College, Shri S Abhaya Kumar Jain in the presence of the Chief Guest Mr.Subhash Ghai, Chairman, MESC and Film Director, Producer, Screenwriter and Educationist. Padma Bhushan Dr. Padma Subrahmanyam, President, Nrithyodaya Chennai was the Guest of Honour.

“The approval by the MESC to grant a Centre of Excellence in Media, Entertainment & Communication to Shasun College only takes forward the ambitions and aspirations of both the institutes to realize the dream of making India the Skill bank of the World by 2022,” said Mr. S Abhaya Kumar Jain and further added “various courses on aspects of Film Making like Directing, Photography, Lighting, Make up Skills, courses on Gaming, Animation and Visual Effects are on the anvil. The Centre of Excellence in Art and Culture will offer courses on the theoretical & practical dimensions of dance, music & theatre, covering the entire range from classical & folk to the small & big screen.”

MESC strives to develop National Occupational Standards, set up effective labour market information systems, establishing Industry Academia Interface and standardisation of training process and certification. With Mr. Subhash Ghai as Chairman and Mr. Mohit Soni as COO, MESC is looking at a revolution and evolution of the educational system in India with emphasis on Skill Based Knowledge and Development.

Shri Shankarlal Sundarbai Shasun Jain College for Women, founded by the Sri SS Jain Education Society in 2005 has been an educational edifice that challenges International Standards in Education and Learning. With ‘Go Beyond’ as its motto, this young city college based in the heart of Chennai has been imparting quality based education with latest innovations, backed by the State of the Art Technology. The college has always envisioned itself to be a Centre of Excellence on par with world class institutions. With the entire infrastructure in place MESC has joined hands with Shasun College to establish a Centre of Excellence in Media, Entertainment & Communication and Art & Culture led by Chief Excellence Officer, Dr. S. Padmavathi.

Highlighting the immense potential of creative thinking and fast paced progress of the Media, Entertainment & Communication Sector and the rising importance of Art & Culture, Principal Dr. Poorna, is convinced that this unique venture will create a revolution in the education sector.

The event witnessed a galaxy of eminent personalities from various fields of Media & Entertainment Industry and Indian Art like Mr. K. Chandrasekhar (Film Writer, Director, Actor, Producer & Distributor), Ms. Rohini(Actress, Screen Writer, Director), Mr. V. M. Raviraj(Actor, Principal (Retd.), MGR Film & TV Institute), Mr. V. Addressing the august audience, Mr. Subhash Ghai emphasised the importance of Skill based training rather than memory based training. He stressed on “Vidhya Dhan” – sharing of knowledge as the pristine and highest form of Dhan anyone can aspire for. He drew lessons from Natya Satra.

Padma Bhushan Dr. Padma Subrahmanyam expressed her happiness to be part of the function and emphasised on cultural relevance in today’s context. She also reiterated on the importance of Media and its responsibility in today’s world. She blessed Shasun College for this new venture marching towards excellence.
