“Mandaadi” Movie Review
“A stirring tale of rivalry, redemption and the race of a lifetime.”
Mathimaran Pugazhendhi’s Mandaadi is an ambitious and engaging drama that brings together strong performances, an unusual sporting backdrop and an emotionally charged rivalry. While the film takes a few unexpected turns in its narrative, it ultimately makes for a rewarding watch, particularly because of its distinctive world and an exciting climactic sequence.
The story follows Kaali, a former sailboat racer who is forced to return to his village under unexpected circumstances. His return gradually pulls him back into a sport he once loved, as well as an old rivalry that he believed was firmly behind him. This journey gives the film both an emotional core and a compelling setting.
One of Mandaadi’s biggest strengths is its use of sailboat racing. The sport adds freshness to the film and gives the familiar themes of rivalry, pride and redemption a different visual identity. The much-anticipated final race is especially effective. The film steadily builds excitement around the event, and when the race finally arrives, it delivers the scale, energy and emotion expected from the culmination. It stands out as one of the film’s major highlights.
The performances further strengthen the material. Soori is perfectly suited to the role of Kaali, bringing a natural groundedness and sincerity to the character. His portrayal makes Kaali easy to connect with and root for. Suhas is equally impressive as Sattapuli, turning the character into a formidable and menacing opponent. Sathyaraj and Mithun Jai Sankar also make a strong impression as Kaali’s mentor and mentee, while Mahima Nambiar brings conviction to both phases of Angel’s character.
GV Prakash Kumar’s music complements the film well, adding energy without becoming overpowering. The film also benefits from small but meaningful details, such as the peace meeting held in a dargah, which give the village and its community a distinctive identity.
Another welcome aspect is the meaningful presence of women in the story. Female characters actively influence events and decisions rather than simply remaining on the sidelines.
Mandaadi may not completely live up to its epic promise, but it succeeds as a sincere, visually distinctive and entertaining film. Its strong cast, refreshing setting and memorable climax make it a worthwhile watch.
