Maha Kumbh Mela begins in Prayagraj today

Maha Kumbh Mela, the biggest congregation of humanity on Earth, began with full pomp and grandeur in holy city of Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh.

Held once every four years at one of the four locations in India, the Maha Kumbh Mela is one of the most significant religious congregations. The cultural extravaganza is being held from January 13 to February 26.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Secretary Manoj Kumar Singh has said that 35 crore pilgrims are expected to attend the Maha Kumbh Mela taking place in the vicinity of Sangam – the confluence of rivers Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati.

He also said that during the period of Mauni Amavasya, an estimated four-five crore devotees are expected to reach the holy city and participate in the festivities.

The word kumbh is derived from the Sanskrit term kumbha, which translates to “pitcher.” It is also the Sanskrit name for the Aquarius zodiac sign associated with Jupiter’s position.

The Maha Kumbh Mela is held at the confluence of three rivers: Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati. This confluence is known as Triveni Sangam.
