“Magudam” Movie Review
A larger-than-life entertainer where action, family emotions and Vishal’s dual performance come together with mixed results.
Vishal makes an ambitious directorial debut with Magudam, a film that combines action, family emotions and commercial entertainment on a grand scale. The actor also takes on a dual role, while GV Prakash Kumar’s background score and impressive visuals add to its appeal. Though the screenplay could have been tighter, Magudam has several engaging moments, particularly in its second half.
Vishal plays Linga and Kirubakaran, two characters from contrasting worlds. Linga is a powerful gangster who enjoys a lavish lifestyle, while Kirubakaran is his estranged son, who leads a simple life with his wife Jamuna (Dushara Vijayan) and their two children. A medical representative, Kirubakaran struggles to meet his family’s needs and stays away from his father’s world. This emotional contrast forms the foundation of the story.
Linga is the more striking of the two roles, and Vishal brings style, intensity and screen presence to the gangster portions. Kirubakaran is presented with greater simplicity, and the family scenes benefit from their grounded treatment. Jamuna, in particular, is thoughtfully written as a wife who understands her family’s financial situation rather than constantly complaining. These moments reveal the potential in the writing.
The first half takes time to establish the conflict, but the film gains momentum after the interval. The second half is more engaging, as the two narrative threads come together and Vishal gets scope to shine as Linga. The emotional sequences become more effective. Anjali makes a strong impression as Linga’s wife and Kirubakaran’s mother, while Dushara Vijayan delivers a sincere performance as Jamuna. Both actresses bring warmth.
GV Prakash Kumar’s background score is a major strength, especially during the action sequences and elevation moments. Vishal presents the film on a large canvas, with production values and ambitious action blocks.
Magudam may have benefited from a tighter runtime and more consistent screenplay, but its scale, performances, music and emotional moments make it a reasonably engaging commercial entertainer. As a debut director, Vishal shows clear ambition and a willingness to attempt a larger-than-life story.
