LS election in Vellore on August 5

The Election Commission of India today announced that election in Vellore Lok Sabha constituency will be conducted on August 5.

While the notification will be issued on July 11, last date for filing of nominations is July 18. The last date to withdraw them is July 22. Polling will be conducted on  August 5 and counting will happen on August 9.

The Lok Sabha polls in Vellore constituency in Tamil Nadu was cancelled following excess use of money power. It was  cancelled following recovery of huge amount of cash allegedly from DMK candidate’s office.

The EC took the decision after the district police had filed a complaint against the accused, Kathir Anand, as well as two party functionaries on the basis of a report from the Income Tax department on April 10.

President Ram Nath Kovind rescinded (cancelled or withdrew) the notification to hold the election to the seat based on the recommendation made by the poll panel.

According to Election Commission’s progressive seizure report till April 16, Tamil Nadu led with cash seizures of Rs 204 crore and Andhra Pradesh came second with Rs 134 crore.

Maharashtra came a poor third with just around Rs 42 crore. It is not only in cash seizures that Tamil Nadu led. Other precious metals like gold and silver seized in Tamil Nadu came to around Rs 294 crore. Putting cash and metals together, the total seizures in the state came to Rs 510 crore.
