Lokah – Chapter 1 Chandra (Tamil) Movie Review

Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra Movie Review: “A Bold Kickoff to a Superhero Adventure”

Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra is a groundbreaking addition to Malayalam cinema, proudly standing as the industry’s first female-led superhero film. Directed by Dominic Arun, with a thoughtful screenplay co-written by Santhy Balachandran, the film dares to blend folklore, mythology, and the timeless theme of immortality, resulting in a world both imaginative and rooted. It doesn’t rush to deliver spectacle but carefully lays the foundation for an ambitious superhero cinematic universe.

The narrative follows Chandra, a mysterious and powerful woman who becomes entangled in the lives of three carefree youngsters and a stern police officer, Nachiyappa. Although advised to remain hidden, Chandra cannot ignore injustice, and her courage places her on the path of inevitable confrontation. Symbolic character names like Sunny and Chandra add subtle depth, connecting folklore with the present. Opening with the line, “All legends have an element of truth,” the film beautifully bridges myth and reality.

Performances are a highlight. Kalyani Priyadarshan delivers one of her most striking roles yet, portraying Chandra with grace, strength, and vulnerability. She brings authenticity to a character who is larger than life, proving her versatility as an actor. Naslen, with his natural charm and wit, adds spontaneity to his scenes, making them instantly relatable. Sandy as Nachiyappa exudes menace and intensity, while Vijayaraghavan’s narration of Chandra’s origins elevates the film, perfectly paired with hauntingly powerful visuals.

The cameos, instead of distracting, weave into the narrative as stepping stones for future chapters of the saga. While some roles appear brief, their significance is clearly being reserved for upcoming installments. The world of Lokah is designed to grow, making these appearances feel purposeful.

On the technical front, the film excels. Nimish Ravi’s cinematography captures grandeur and intimacy in equal measure, while Jakes Bejoy’s score is energetic, soulful, and perfectly in tune with the film’s heroic tone. Despite minor dips in humor and slightly uneven dialogue, the film sustains interest with its layered storytelling and immersive presentation.

Ultimately, Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra is a heartfelt and ambitious start to something bigger. It successfully introduces a new kind of hero to Malayalam cinema and sets the stage for a saga filled with promise, courage, and imagination.
