L. Murugan resigns as Union Minister, cites desire to return to grassroots work in Tamil Nadu
Union Minister of State L. Murugan has resigned from the Council of Ministers, saying he wants to return to grassroots political work in Tamil Nadu.
Murugan was serving as Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting and Parliamentary Affairs in the Union government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. His resignation marks a significant development for the BJP’s political activities in Tamil Nadu, where the party has been working to strengthen its organisational presence.
According to reports, Murugan’s decision is linked to his desire to focus on grassroots work in the state.
Murugan, a senior BJP leader from Tamil Nadu, previously served as president of the party’s state unit from 2020 to 2021. He was appointed Union Minister of State in July 2021 and continued in the Union
government following the formation of the third Narendra Modi ministry in June 2024.
He is also a member of the Rajya Sabha representing Madhya Pradesh, having been elected to the Upper House in 2021 and elected for a second term in 2024.
