Tamil Nadu Revenue and Disaster Management, Principal Secretary Atulya Misra today submitted his report of the probe into the circumstances that led to the forest fire incident in Kurangani, in which 23 persons were killed.
He personally handed over the report to Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami in the presence of Forest Minister Dindugal Srinivasan and Chief Secretary Girija Vaidhyanathan at the Secretariat today.
The report said the forest department was ill-equipped to handle forest fires and any other disasters.
The officer interviewed the survivors and family members of the victims in Chennai in the first week of April to know what had gone wrong.
According to media reports, the 124 page report has listed out the following reasons as cause of the fire and human loss.
* Taking of untrained trekkers
* Vacancy in forest department
* Mistake from forest officials
* Presence of lodges constructed without permission in Kurangani hills
Misra held discussions with forest department officials to eco-tourism and avoid such tragic accidents in the future.
