Key highlights of Union budget 2022

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented a ₹ 39.45 lakh crore Union Budget 2022 in the Parliament on Tuesday. The major part of the spending would be on highways and affordable housing, in a bid to revive the economy hit by the Covid pandemic.

Sitharaman’s Budget for the fiscal year beginning April 2022 proposed a massive 35 per cent jump in capital expenditure to ₹ 7.5 lakh crore.

Just like last year, the Budget gave a big boost for infrastructure spending — from 5G spectrum auction, expanding national highways by 25,000 kms, inter-linking of rivers and manufacturing of 400 new generation Vande Bharat trains.

The Finance Minister also gave clarity on taxation of earnings from virtual digital assets. In the Budget, the government has proposed a 30% tax on income from transactions in such assets.

According to the Union Budget 2022-23 presented in Parliament by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Tuesday, Goods and Services Tax will contribute 16 paise in every rupee revenue, while Corporation Tax will contribute 15 paise to each rupee earned.
