Kerala plans direct talks with Tamil Nadu on Mullaiperiyar dam issue
The Kerala government is preparing to initiate direct discussions with Tamil Nadu to address long-standing concerns surrounding the Mullaperiyar Dam, signalling a renewed effort to find common ground on one of the most sensitive inter-state issues in southern India.
Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan said Kerala intends to engage with the Tamil Nadu government through bilateral consultations aimed at balancing the state’s safety concerns with Tamil Nadu’s water requirements. According to the Chief Minister, dialogue remains the most constructive path forward in resolving differences related to the ageing dam.
The proposed talks are expected to focus on issues relating to dam safety, water storage, and future management mechanisms. Kerala has consistently maintained that the structure’s age warrants continued attention and evaluation, while Tamil Nadu has argued that the dam remains safe and is vital for irrigation and drinking water needs in several districts.
The Mullaperiyar Dam has been a subject of dispute between the two neighbouring states for decades. While the dam is located in Kerala, its operations and water utilisation are governed by agreements that allow Tamil Nadu to draw water for agricultural and other purposes. The differing positions of the two states have resulted in prolonged legal and political debates over safety, water levels and future infrastructure plans.
