‘Kattalan’ Movie Review

Malayalam cinema has recently emerged as one of the strongest industries in Indian filmmaking, consistently delivering content-driven movies that can confidently stand alongside pan-Indian blockbusters. Films rooted in raw storytelling, intense action, and realistic characters are finding great acceptance among audiences, and Kaattan appears to follow that successful path with style and energy.

Directed by Paul George and starring Antony Varghese, Kaattan presents a rugged gangster drama set deep inside the forests where illegal ivory smuggling becomes the backbone of a dangerous criminal empire. Mari, played by Sunil, is a ruthless smuggler who has been hunting elephants from a young age, exporting tusks illegally to Sri Lanka while eliminating anyone who dares to oppose him. His brutal rise to power creates fear among both enemies and his own men.

Supported by nearly forty hunters, Mari controls the forest like a cartel king. However, the constant violence and greed slowly create dissatisfaction within his gang, with many secretly wishing to bring an end to his rule. At the same time, the rival Eddy Gang attempts to overthrow Mari and take control of the ivory trade.

This is where Antony enters the story with massive screen presence. His character arrives as a fearless problem solver who handles every challenge with confidence and power. Antony Varghese delivers a strong performance with minimal dialogue and maximum impact, allowing his action and expressions to speak louder than words.

The first half of the film builds an engaging atmosphere with stylish visuals, intense confrontations, and a particularly interesting interval twist involving the smuggling operation. Though the film carries visible inspirations from mass-action entertainers like KGF and Pushpa, it still manages to maintain its own gritty identity through forest-based action sequences and raw energy.

The second half becomes more action-oriented and delivers several thrilling stunt sequences that keep the momentum alive. Technically, the film stands out impressively. The cinematography captures the forest terrain beautifully, especially during the action scenes, creating a visually intimidating experience. Ravi Basrur’s powerful background score further enhances the mass appeal and elevates many important moments throughout the film.

In Kattalan, Harishankar Narayanan portrays SP Nelson Nadar, a ruthless and corrupt police officer with roots in Madurai. Closely connected to an illegal ivory trafficking and elephant poaching network, Nelson  Nadar operates as a powerful force within the criminal underworld. He also serves as the influential brother- in-law and chief supporter of the rival smuggler Eddy, played by Kabir Duhan Singh, further intensifying the film’s web of crime, betrayal, and power struggles

Overall, Kattalan promises to be a stylish action entertainer with strong performances, impressive visuals, and engaging gangster drama.
