Karur stampede: Edappadi Palaniswami seeks CBI enquiry

AIADMK General Secretary and Leader of the Opposition, Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS), has publicly demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry into the stampede that occurred during a political rally in Karur.

The incident took place during an event held by actor-politician Vijay’s party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), on Saturday, September 27, 2025, and tragically resulted in the death of at least 41 people.

Palaniswami has termed the Commission of Inquiry constituted by the Tamil Nadu government—headed by retired High Court Judge Justice Aruna Jagadeesan—as an “eyewash.”

He contended that the public will not trust an investigation conducted by the state government and that only a CBI probe can uncover the truth and ensure justice for the victims’ families.

While not politicizing the tragedy, he has criticized the ruling DMK government, questioning its handling of the crisis and implying that better police protection and administrative planning could have averted the tragedy.
