Karunanidhi’s health critical, next 12 hours very crucial

The health condition of DMK chief M Karunanidhi has declined, with the hospital saying that maintaining his vital organ functions continues to be a challenge.

The latest health update immediately led to hundreds of DMK supporters gathering at the hospital premises, who then continued to wait till late in the night.

“Maintaining his vital organ functions continues to remain a challenge considering his age-related ailments. He is on continuous monitoring and being treated with active medical support,” the hospital said.

“His response to the medical intervention over the next 24 hours will determine the prognosis,” Dr Aravindan Selvaraj, executive director of Kauvery Hospital said in the bulletin.

Vehicular traffic flowed right around the hospital on Monday even as groups of spirited Kalaignar fans shouted slogans while holding his portraits and waving DMK flags. However signs were rife that the crowds could swell through the night, as more people trickled in with news of his declined medical condition spreading.

Union minister Nitin Gadkari called on Karunanidhi on Monday evening amid news of his declining health. The BJP leader met MK Stalin and Kanimozhi at the Kauvery Hospital and enquired about Karunanidhi’s health.

Karunanidhi was admitted to the hospital following a drop in his blood pressure in the early hours of July 28. Since then the five-time Chief Minister’s medical status has gone through ups and downs.
