Almost all political parties except the AIADMK have welcomed the Madras High Court order quashing the notification for local body polls.
DMK president M Karunanidhi welcomed the Madras High Court order scrapping a notification for civic elections scheduled for later this month and said it has given political parties more time for poll-related works and campaign.
“I wholeheartedly welcome this ruling as it would pave the way for holding free and fair civic polls…there is no doubt it will give solace that there is now more opportunity for poll-related works and to undertake campaigning,” he said.
Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president S Thirunavukkarasar, while welcoming the judgment, appealed to the AIADMK government to refrain from taking to matter to a higher court. “The government should accept its mistakes and correct it,” he said.
PMK founder S. Ramadoss welcomed the Madras High Court verdict. In a statement, he said that the court has reiterated the PMK’s position that the local body elections should be held only after delimitation of constituencies and adequate time should be given to political parties after proper notification of those local bodies reserved for women and SCs/STs.
CPI(M), Tamil Maanila Congress and other parties too have welcomed the judgment. State Election Commission (SEC) displayed an ‘unwarranted hurry’ in holdiong the local body polls in Tamil Nadu, and no level playing field was ensured for political parties, the Madras high court has said, setting aside the September 26 poll notification on Tuesday.
“The election commission, having delayed the onset of the election work, is rushing through the procedures in a hurried manner, thereby causing prejudice to the other contesting parties,” the court said.
