Karthi’s Sultan: Whose story is that?

Karthi, who is awaiting the release of Lokesh Kanagaraj’s Kaithi, is presently shooting for Sulthan. Directed by Bakkiyaraj Kannan, the film is produced by Dream Warrior Pictures and marks Rashmika Mandanna’s foray into Kollywood.

Recently a group protested against team Sultan as they think that the film projects Tipu Sultan in a bad light. The slogans raised by the group resulted in a fight between two other gangs near the shooting spot in Dindigul.

The protesters claimed that the film was about Tipu Sultan (who had been crowned King of Dindigul in 1788) and demanded that the shooting of the movie not be held at the fort. Following this, a statement from Dream Warrior Pictures has refuted the charges.

The production house said in the statement that of late, incidents of private individuals and some groups attacking movies for personal gain and publicity are on the rise.
“There is a censor board to ensure what is not to be shown in a movie. Apart from this, the right to decide what to portray in a movie lies with its creators. This is the freedom and protection provided to us by our country’s law. Hence, we strongly condemn any efforts made by any organisation or individual to stifle the freedom of creators,” it said.

SR Prabhu of Dream Warrior said, “We were shooting for the last few days at Malaikottai after taking prior permission. September 24 was actually the final day of the shoot and our cast and crew were almost wrapping up the shoot when, all of a sudden, the people who are supposed to be from Hindu Munnani started protesting. It was not clear about what they were creating such a commotion.”
