Karthi enters Rs 100 crore club with Kaithi

Karthi’s Deepavali release Kaithi, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, is doing wonders at the box office. Kaithi opened to a massive and overwhelming response at the box office on this Diwali weekend. According to trade reports, the film has collected Rs 100 crore, becoming the first film of the actor to do so.

The film, a thriller that takes place in the night, has not only been performing well over the weekend, but it has also been equally adept at fetching good numbers on weekdays.

Made at a shoestring budget, the film has now grossed nearly 100 crore rupees worldwide. In Tamil Nadu, the film is nearing the 50 crore mark. In Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, Kaithi has grossed around 15 crore rupees and it has also been declared a blockbuster in Kerala and Karnataka.

Interestingly, Kaithi is the first 100 crore grosser for Karthi in his career. It is worth mentioning that Karthi and director Lokesh Kanagaraj have announced the possibilities of making a prequel to the film.

Recently, Karthi came out with a thanks message to all those who supported his Deepavali release Kaithi, with the movie emerging a blockbuster. In a post, he said, ““I don’t know if I can thank you all enough for the amount of love and appreciation you have given for #Kaithi #Khaidi. We set out to present an exciting story and our team put their heart into it. But we never expected such an overwhelming response. I take a big bow with a heartful of gratitude!Thank you and love you all!”

An action thriller directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj of Maangaram fame, the film stars Karthi, Narain, Dheena, George Maryan, Harish Uthaman, Harish Peeradi and Malavika Avinash to name a few. Music for the film is by Sam CS, editing by Philomin Raj and cinematography by Sathyam Sooryan.

Kaithi grabbed all attention mainly because of the positive reviews and word of mouth from the general public. The film has been now given bigger screens and the number of shows has also been increased.

Speaking to reporters in Chennai recently, Karthi revealed that talks for a sequel to Kaithi are well underway. “Lokesh called me just last night and asked for just 30 days to finish Kaithi 2”, Karthi said.

Lokesh, who is now directing Vijay for a film tentatively titled Thalapathy 64, tweeted: “Thanx for the overwhelming response guys,.. loved every minute in sets and the entire process of making kaithi…will cherish this forever! Thank you once again prabu sir and karthi sir for the opportunity!..To answer all your txts and calls yes“ Dilli will be back”.
