Karate Thiyagarajan meets Chidambaram, slams Azhagiri

Senior Congress leader Karate Thiagarajan, who was recently suspended from the party, today called on veteran leader and former Union Minister P Chidambaram in Chennai.

Speaking to reporters later, he said TNCC president K S Azhagiri had suspended him without seeking his explanation.

“I am always loyal to Congress and Rahul Gandhi. I don’t know whether Rahul is aware of my suspension from the party,” the former Deputy Mayor of Chennai said.

Stating that he was only being pressurised by the party, Thiagarajan wanted to know as to why action was not taken against MLA Vijayadharani for speaking in support of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Recently, the All India Congress Committee had suspended senior leader Karate Thiagarajan from the party with immediate effect.

In a statement, AICC general secretary K C Venugopal said, “AICC has approved the proposal sent by the General Secretary (In-Charge, Tamil Nadu) for taking stern disciplinary action against Shri. Karate Thiagarajan, South Chennai District Congress President.”

It said the decision was taken for the frequent ‘anti-party activities (of Thiagarajan) and breach of discipline’. “Based on this he has been suspended from the party with the immediate effect.”

It may be recalled that Thiagarajan recently made comments against Congress’ alliance partner DMK.

Recently, Thiagarajan and his followers turned up at the party headquarters with a portrait of late DMK president M Karunanidhi and paid floral tributes to him on his 96th birth anniversary.

Thiagarajan defended his action. “What is wrong in it? It’s a way of paying tribute to a great leader. I was calling all the leaders in my party since morning. But most of them went to Anna Arivalayam to garland Kalaignar’s (Karunanidhi) statue. When parties want seats during alliance formation, you go to Arivalayam and ask them for seats, but when I bring Kalaignar’s photo to Satyamurthy Bhavan, it’s an issue,” he said.
