Five days after a youth died in custody at Kannagi Nagar police station, nine vehicles parked inside the police station were set on fire by unidentified people on Sunday.
This is second attack on the station in just few days. Reportedly crude petrol bombs were used to destroy the vehicles.
Meenkulambu Karthi, a 22-year-old who was arrested for allegedly stealing a chain, was found dead in his cell on Wednesday under suspicious circumstances.
It is the second such incident of custodial death in as many weeks, following the alleged suicide of the lone suspect in the Swathi murder case, Ramkumar.
On Sunday, Kannagi Nagar inspector, Munusamy was transferred and kept in waiting list. On Saturday, the victim’s family alleged that a police officer from the same station had offered a bribe of Rs 2 lakh and a day later nine motorcycles were set ablaze at the same station.
During interrogation, police said Karthik became unconscious. He was rushed to the hospital but died there. After postmortem and final rites, Karthik’s family turned up at police commissionerate to return the ‘bribe’ which they claimed was given by policemen to keep the alleged custodial death under wraps.
