DMK Rajya Sabha MP Kanimozhi will represent the party at a memorial meet to be conducted in Chennai by the BJP for former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who passed away recently.
On the other hand, BJP senior leaders including union minister Nitin Gadkari and Muralidhar Rao will attend DMK’s memorial meeting for M Karunanidhi on September 30.
Initially, BJP national president Amit Shah was expected to attend the DMK event. However now, it is said Nitin Gadkari and Muralidhar Rao would represent the party.
Downplaying speculations that the DMK is getting close to the BJP, DMK sources said they have invited leaders from all leading parties from across the country.
While the Congress, the principal ally of the DMK, will be represented by Ghulam Nabi Azad since AICC president Rahul Gandhi will be out of the country, Chief Ministers of various States including Delhi’s Arvind Kejriwal are also slated to attend the high profile event, which is happening just months ahead of Lok Sabha elections.
Recently, Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) President Su Thirunavukkarasar said his party was not worried or concerned about BJP National President Amit Shah’s participation in the August 30 memorial meeting of late Karunanidhi convened by the DMK.
Congress was an ally of the DMK in the State. Talking to reporters, Thirunavukkarasar said participation
of Mr Amit Shah in the meeting does not mean that the BJP would align with the DMK or the Congress would be thrown out of the alliance.
