Kandanchavadi building collapse: NDRF concludes searches

The National Disaster Response Force said that the search has ended from their end at the site of an under-construction building which collapsed in Kandanchavadi area in Chennai on Saturday.

Vinoj, Assistant Commandant, NDRF said, “From our end search has concluded. One dead body was recovered. 61 personnel were part of this operation.”

As many as 23 people have been rescued, ANI reported. Eight ambulances and three fire tenders have been pressed into service as part of rescue operations.

All those who were hurt and trapped under the debris, including three who suffered head injuries, were rescued. At least 28 persons have been admitted in hospitals for treatment.

While 12 of the injured were sent to the Government Hospital at Royapettah, the others are being treated at a private hospital on OMR.

According to reports, as officials went about trying to rescue all those who were trapped under the debris of a shed that collapsed at a construction site in Taramani, they were initially hamstrung by lack of information on how many workers were actually employed at the site.

The scaffolding was suspected to have given away due to weight and trapped some labourers after it collapsed, police said. Seventeen people have been rescued by Fire and Rescue personnel, a police official said.
