Kamal unveils Balachander’s statue, Rajini attends

As part of his birthday celebrations, actor-filmmaker and Makkal Needhi Maiam founder-president Kamal Haasan today unveiled a statue of his mentor and legendary director K Balachander.

The statue has been erected at the office of Raj Kamal Films International in Chennai. The function saw the participation of top guns of Tamil film industry, including superstar Rajinikanth, Mani Ratnam and Vairamuthu.

Pooja Kumar, Ishari Ganesh, Balachander’s family members and others also took part in the event. On Thursday, Kamal Haasan celebrated his 65th birthday at Paramakudi in Ramanathapuram district, by unveiling a statue of his late father and dedicating a skill development centre.

His family members, including brother Charuhaasan, daughters Shruthi, Akshara and niece Suhashini, actor Prabu, actress Pooja Kumar were among others who participated in the grand function.

This year also marks the versatile artist’s 60th year in Indian Cinema, as he made his debut as a 5-year old child artist starring in AVM Productions’ Kalathur Kannamma. His performance as a child artist on debut also won him the Rashtrapati Medal (President’s Gold Medal).
