Kamal talks about approaching M S Subbulakshmi for Hey Ram
Legendary Carnatic singer M S Subbulakshmi’s remarkable life and musical legacy are set to be brought to the screen, with a new biopic launched in Chennai on Wednesday.
The project was unveiled at the Music Academy during an event marking Subbulakshmi’s 110th birth anniversary. The makers announced the title as M.S A Legacy On Screen, with actor Rashmika Mandanna set to portray the legendary vocalist.
Kamal Haasan attended the launch as chief guest and performed the ceremonial first clap, officially marking the beginning of the production. Producer Allu Aravind and Rashmika were also present.
Speaking at the event, Kamal recalled his admiration for Subbulakshmi and other celebrated musicians. He remembered listening to her music over the years and meeting her while working on his film Hey Ram.
Kamal said he had hoped she would lend her voice to Vaishnav Janato for the film, but she was unwell at the time. He also recalled feeling fortunate to have encountered several towering figures of Indian music, including D K Pattammal and M L Vasanthakumari.
Rashmika expressed her gratitude at being chosen for the role and spoke about the spiritual quality she associates with Subbulakshmi’s singing.
She said the opportunity was especially meaningful because the event was being held on Subbulakshmi’s birthday and described the singer’s voice as possessing a unique divine quality. The film will explore the life and legacy of one of India’s most celebrated musical icons.
