Kamal Haasan’s MNM gets back torchlight

Makkal Needhi Maiam leader Kamal Haasan on Friday said the party has got back the ‘battery torch’ symbol.

“The party got battery torch symbol for the 234 constituencies (in Tamil Nadu),” said Kamal Haasan in a video message posted by the party.

“It happened on the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr who struggled for better the lives of the oppressed,” Thanking the Election Commission of India and those who supported the party to get back the symbol, he said, “Let the light spread!”.

He made the announcement in the presence of the party senior functionaries, including vice-president R Mahendran and general secretary and former IAS officer Santhosh Babu.

The party contested the 2019 Lok Sabha polls in the symbol. However, the Election Commission of India had recently allotted the (battery torch) symbol to a little known outfit MGR Makkal Katchi in Tamilnadu, while it allotted the symbol to the MNM in Puducherry.

Following this, the MNM approached the commission and also approached the Madras high court to direct the ECI to allot the (battery torch) symbol to it.

Meanwhile, founder president of the MGR Makkal Katchi ‘MGR’ Viswanathan wrote to the ECI seeking some other symbol that was closely associated with their idol and former CM M G Ramachandran.
