Kamal Haasan reflects on 67 years in cinema, thanks audience
Kamal Haasan has marked 67 years in the film industry by reflecting on his long career and the lessons he believes he has gained along the way.
Taking to social media on Thursday, the veteran actor thanked audiences for their wishes and said he considered only around two decades of his career as genuine learning, describing the rest as years spent moving along with the flow.
He used the imagery of a river and the sea to describe his relationship with cinema, saying that artists and audiences are ultimately moving towards a larger collective form of the art.
Kamal also placed his career in the wider history of filmmaking. Since the Lumière brothers’ first public screening in December 1895, cinema has existed for roughly 130 years. Having been part of the industry for 67 of those years, he noted that his career spans more than half of cinema’s recorded history.
Despite that milestone, the actor maintained a self-critical view of his journey, saying he considers only a portion of those years as genuine experience and learning. He expressed hope that what he has learned can continue to evolve before audiences eventually stop counting his years in cinema.
He ended the reflection with a humorous description of himself as perhaps the oldest member of Gen Z. Kamal Haasan began his career as a child artist in Kalathur Kannamma in 1960 and received the President’s Gold Medal for his performance. His most recent release was Thug Life in 2025. His upcoming projects include collaborations with directors Anbariv and Nelson, with the latter project also featuring Rajinikanth.
