Kamal Haasan mourns veteran actor Sowcar Janaki

Kamal Haasan has paid tribute to veteran performer Sowcar Janaki, who died at the age of 94 after being hospitalised on Thursday.

Haasan recalled their long professional association, which began with the 1962 film Parthal Pasi Theerum and continued across several films over more than four decades.

He remembered Janaki as a highly accomplished actor who had worked with many of the leading stars of her generation. He also highlighted her association with filmmaker K Balachander, who frequently cast her in important roles.

Janaki began her film career with the Telugu movie Shavukaru in 1950. Her notable Tamil films included Balachander’s Neerkumizhi, Edhir Neechal, Kaviya Thalaivi and Thillu Mullu.

Her final Tamil film appearance was in Biskoth, released in 2022. Haasan described her passing as the loss of a significant maternal presence in South Indian cinema and expressed his grief at her death.
