Kalyani reveals she quit acting because of sexual harassment

Kalyani is popular in Tamil Nadu for close to two decades ever since she made her debut as a child actor in Alli Thantha Vaanam in which she had a meaty role alongside Prabhu Deva.

She later had another memorable character in Jayam Ravi’s debut movie Jayam directed by Mohan Raja and has also done several television serials as anchor and as a leading lady. She was also part of Vijayakanth’s Ramana directed by A R Murugadoss.

At a time when when many are of the opinion that she quit cinema because of her marriage, she has revealed that she bid adieu to both film and television industry because of sexual harassment.

Kalyani has revealed in a recent interview with an online portal that she quit acting because she had been facing sexual harassment. Kalyani expressed in the interview that she felt fortunate for having had the opportunity to act with Prabhu Deva at an early stage in her career.

However, she said but when she actually started getting lead roles, her mother received a call, asking that Kalyani should make “adjustments” to get casted in big movies.

She said she was disappointed that she didn’t get big movies because of these unethical practices in the industry. She obviously quit the big screen eventually after ‘those calls’ and later moved to small screens. However, there too she faced some amount of harassment, and then finally decided to stay away from acting for a peaceful life, she added.

Though the Me Too movement has created awareness regarding the exploitation of women it is sad that talented women are still being exploited and lose work due to the personal perversions of a few men in power. Kalyani is now mother to a girl child and lives with her family in Bengaluru.
