Former MLA, senior PMK leader and firebrand Vanniyar Sangam leader ‘Kaduvetti’ J Guru died at a private hospital in Chennai on Friday. He is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter.
A trusted lieutenant of party founder S Ramadoss, Guru was a fiery orator known for organising his community men. He headed the Vanniyar Sangam for long.
Guru was undergoing treatment for liver complications and respiratory problems for last few days at Apollo Hospitals, Greams Road. He was responding well to the treatment and medications. However, respiratory problem increased on Friday and he was declared dead on Friday evening at 8.30 pm by doctors.
While Dr. Ramadoss took care of the PMK, the task of mobilising the Vanniyar community in favour of the party was left to Guru. Guru faced many cases for making inflammatory speeches.
Guru led protests seeking adequate compensations for those affected by quarries of cement factories in Ariyalur. Above all, when Ramadoss and Rajinikant locked horns over the latter’s Baba in 2002, Guru saw to it that the movie was not screened in the district.
Guru was admitted with ‘breathing difficulties’ to the Apollo Hospitals recently. He had undergone tracheostomy successfully.
In a statement, Ramadoss deeply condoled Guru’s death and dubbed him as his elder son. Meanwhile, sources said Ramadoss, unable to bear Guru’s loss, fainted at his Thailapuram residence and he was treated by doctors.
