“Jockey” Movie Review

Jockey, directed by Pragabhal, is a refreshingly original film that brings to the screen the little-known world of Madurai’s traditional goat fighting circuit, a cultural space rarely explored in Indian cinema. By choosing such a rooted and unconventional backdrop, the film instantly sets itself apart and invites viewers into a raw, dusty arena where pride, tradition, and rivalry collide.

The narrative revolves around two competing trainers, Ramar (Yuvan Krishna) and Ghabra Karthi (Ridhaan Krishnas), whose intense rivalry plays out through their prized goats rather than direct confrontation. This unique storytelling choice adds an intriguing layer to the conflict, allowing the animals to become powerful extensions of human ambition, ego, and legacy. The goat fights themselves are the film’s greatest strength—captured with authenticity and nerve. Shot using real animals, these sequences are visceral, gripping, and impossible to look away from.

NS Uthayakumar’s cinematography deserves special praise for immersing the audience in this world. The swirling dust, charged expressions, and kinetic movement of the arena are captured with striking realism. The climactic fight sequence stands out as a technical and emotional high point, further elevated by live sync-sound that amplifies the tension and immediacy of the moment.

Sakthi Balaji’s music complements the film effectively, never overpowering the visuals while enhancing the emotional beats. The background score maintains a steady intensity that suits the earthy tone of the narrative. What also stands out is the sheer effort and dedication visible in every frame, reflecting a sincere attempt to portray this tradition with respect and commitment.

While the human drama takes a backseat to the spectacle, the film’s strength lies in its documentary-like curiosity and cultural insight. Jockey succeeds as a cinematic window into an unfamiliar tradition, making it a compelling watch for viewers seeking something rooted, raw, and refreshingly different.
