Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa today inaugurated the works for Metro Rail extension in I from Washermenpet to Tiruvotriyur Wimco Nagar in the presence of Union Minister for Urban Development, Venkaiah Naidu.
Speaking after commencing the groundbreaking work for the project, Jayalalithaa thanked Naidu for getting the central government’s
nod for the extension work after the Tamil Nadu government made a request in this regard.
She said that the works on this extension would be over within three years.
Accusing the previous UPA regime of failing to give the nod for this extension, the Chief Minister said Venkaiah Naidu had played a key role in getting the Central approval for this Phase I Extension.
She said she was happy that the extension work also comes under her R K Nagar constituency, from where she was re-elected to the Assembly for a second consecutive term in the May 16 elections.
The project will have eight Metro Rail stations and a depot. She said train service from Chinnamalai to Airport would commence next month.
“It would be no exaggeration to say that Venkaiah Naidu has been in the forefront in safeguarding the interests of Tamil Nadu and in getting approval of Centre for the projects of Tamil”, the Chief Minister said.
