Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa has announced a solatium of Rs. 3 lakh to the families of 23 persons, including police personnel, who had died in different incidents across the State this year.
In a statement, she expressed deep condolences to the bereaved family members. While 11 had died of illness, six died in road accidents, two drowned, three were electrocuted and one fell from an electric post.
The incidents happened in Chennai, Cuddalore, Erode, Madurai, Nagapattinam, Perambalur, Theni, Tirunelveli, Tiruvannamalai and Vellore districts during March, April, May and June this year.
Meanwhile, in a bid to bring down the crime rate, the Chennai City Police launched a storming operation Saturday night and detained more than 550 people on various charges.
Police sources said as part of the operation, police intensified patrolling and conducted vehicle checks and searches in hotels and lodges to arrest history sheeters, who were on the run, and execute the non-bailable warrants issued against them by the courts.
During the night-long operation, 491 people were detained on suspicious grounds and ten arrested under Secs 109 and 110 of CrPc. The sources said three criminals against whom Non-bailable warrants were pending, were also arrested and a total of 82 people were held on charges of drunken driving.
