Jayalalitha seeks diplomatic steps from PM to solve fishermen issue: Even as five more fishermen from Rameswaram were arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy for poaching into its waters, Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking his intervention to secure the release of 34 fishermen in Sri Lankan custody.
This message was stated in a letter sent to PM Narendra Modi, that brought to his notice yet another incident in which five fishermen of Tamil Nadu, who set sail from Rameswaram, were apprehended by the Sri Lankan Navy in the early hours of Sunday morning.
“This is to bring to your notice yet another incident in which five fishermen of Tamil Nadu have been apprehended by the Sri Lankan Navy,” she said.
Stating that they were apprehended by the Sri Lankan Navy in the early hours of Monday and taken to Kankesanthurai, she said it was a matter of ‘grave concern’.
“I request that a calibrated set of actions is immediately initiated to ensure that our fishermen are allowed to pursue their livelihood with freedom in their traditional waters,” she said.
“I have repeatedly emphasised the importance of the Government of India undertaking a strong diplomatic offensive to uphold the rights and interests of Indian fishermen from Tamil Nadu,” she said.
