Jaya could have been PM: Former TN governor

Former Tamil Nadu Governor P S Ramamohana Rao has come out with an emotional condolence message over the death of late chief minister J Jayalalithaa.

He said: “My wife and I convey our profound grief and heartfelt condolences to the Government and people of Tamilnadu as also the dear and near ones of Selvi Jayalalithaa on her untimely demise.

She was a rare phenomenon in the political history of India, who rose to dizzy heights of leadership against formidable odds. She distinguished herself in whatever she did ,be it in academics, films and politics.

A woman, a loner, an immaculate articulator, and a political outsider she displayed tremendous self belief, supreme self confidence, a sharp mind and a steely resolve to overcome all odds to provide firm and decisive leadership to the AIDMK and the State of Tamilnadu for nearly three decades.

An uncompromising champion of the interests and rights of Tamilnadu, she would be forever remembered for her deep empathy for women and perceptive benevolence for the under privileged.

She could have been Prime Minister of India if the political permutations had been more favourable.

In death as in life she showed her characteristic courage and defiance. As a former Governor of Tamilnadu I recall my cordial and convivial relations with her as the State’s Chief Minister. May her soul rest in peace.”
