Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa has presented eight gram gold coins along with financial assistance to five beneficiaries from Chennai and Kanchipuram district, as part of Marriage Assistance Scheme for the year 2016-17, through which 12,500 women will be benefitted.
As a token gesture, she gave away old coins to five beneficiaries from Dr Radhakrishnan Nagar, her home constituency and the neighbouring Kanchipuram district, a release said today.
The statement said as per a poll promise made by her, Jayalalithaa increased the four gram gold being given to women as part of Marriage Assistance Scheme to eight gram.
Fulfilling it, Jayalalithaa gave gold coins and financial assistance to five women from R K Nagar constituency and Kanchipuram district.
Since 2011, the AIADMK government has been extending Rs 25,000 and a four-gram gold coin to women who studied up to Class 10 and above. Women who are graduates or diploma holders have been given Rs 50,000 along with a gold coin for their marriages.
Jayalalithaa announced eight grams of gold under the marriage assistance scheme after coming to power for her second consecutive term in May last.
