Former Chief minister and AIADMK general secretary J Jayalalithaa was laid to rest near MGR Memorial amid tearful adieu of lakhs of people and VVIPs.
Earlier, flanked by Governor Vidyasagar Rao, Union Ministers Venkaiah Naidu and Pon Radhakrishnan and others, Modi placed a wreath on the body which was lying in state at Rajaji Hall.
Ever since her body was shifted to the Rajaji Hall from her Poes Garden residence, where it was taken from Apollo hospital for last rites, people cutting across, caste, creed and religion, and leaders of various political parties paid their last respects.
Meanwhile, State-run retail liquor outlets in Tamil Nadu will be closed for three days from today as a mark of respect to departed AIADMK supremo J Jayalalithaa, the state government said.
The Prohibition and Excise Department said in a communication that all shops of the Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (TASMAC) and bars throughout the state be closed on December 6,7 and 8 “as a mark of respect to late Selvi J Jayalalithaa.”
