Jaya, Karunanidhi cast votes
Chief minister J Jayalalithaa, DMK president M Karunanidhi, DMDK president Vijayakanth, DMK treasurer M K Stalin and other top political leaders of Tamil Nadu cast their votes today.
Speaking to reporters after exercising franchise at Stella Mary’s College, Jayalalithaa said, “On 19, you will get to know the verdict of the people.”
Karunanidhi told reporters at Gopalapuram that his party would emerge victorious and would get majority to form government. Stalin said the DMK would make a clean sweep of constituencies in Chennai.
DMDK president Vijayakanth cast vote along with his family members at Saligramam, while BJP Tamil Nadu unit president Tamilisai Soundararajan did it at Virugambakkam. She also did first-aid to a policeman who fainted during election duty.
There were reports of technical snag in EVMs at polling stations in Tirunelveli. Faulty EVMs delayed voting in 12 booths in Virudhunagar. Similar complaints came in from other parts of Tamil Nadu too.
R K Nagar has the maximum number of candidates at 45, with DMK (Shimla Muthuchozhan) and VCK (Vasanthi Devi) also fielding women nominees to take on Jayalalithaa. BJP’s M N Raja is also in the fray. BJP’s candidates include its National Secretary H Raja and state President Tamilisai Sounderrajan.
DMK and others have assured to implement prohibition in one go if they were voted to power. AIADMK and DMK have been slapped showcause notices by the Election Commission for violating model code, saying their election manifestos do not “substantially” fulfil its guidelines
