A day after the State Election Commission notified the local body poll schedule, the ruling AIADMK released its list of candidates for the post of councillor in the all the 12 Municipal Corporations in Tamil Nadu.
The list was released by party general secretary and Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, who is presently convalescing at a corporate hospital in Chennai.
Of the 12 Mayors, only three – from Salem, Tiruchy and Thanjavur – have been given party ticket to contest this time. As far as Chennai Corporation is concerned, sitting Mayor Saidai S Duraisamy has been denied party ticket to contest the elections.
Among the incumbent mayors, S Soundappan (Salem), MSR Jaya (Trichy) and Savithri Gopal (Thanjavur) could make it this time, besides Coimbatore deputy mayor Leelavathi Unni and Trichy deputy mayor J Seenivasan.
Former Villivakkam MLA J.C.D. Prabhakaran, who had unsuccessfully taken on DMK treasurer M.K. Stalin in Kolathur constituency in the May Assembly elections, has been given a ticket to contest for the post councillor from Ward 80. It is expected that he could be the party’s mayoral candidate post-elections.
While former minister party’s Tirupur district secretary MSM Anandan will contest from ward 24, former Trichy mayor and TMC leader Sarubala R Thondaiman, who switched loyalty to AIADMK recently, has been nominated for the ward 44.
