Jana Nayagan: Madras High Court orders CBFC to issue U/A certificate

The Madras High Court on Thursday ruled in favour of the makers of Jana Nayagan, directing the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to issue a U/A 16+ certificate for the Vijay-starrer.

Justice PT Asha passed the order after hearing arguments from both sides, clearing a major hurdle that had led to the film’s last-minute postponement. Following the verdict, the makers are yet to announce a new release date.

According to reports, Jana Nayagan could either hit cinemas within the next couple of days or be released during the Pongal festive window on January 14.

While delivering the ruling, Justice Asha observed that the complainant, a member of the censor board who had raised objections, appeared to be an afterthought.

She further remarked that entertaining such complaints sets a dangerous precedent, underscoring the need for consistency and accountability in the certification process.

The film’s release was delayed after the CBFC failed to issue the censor certificate in time, following objections raised by a board member over certain aspects of the film.

The delay triggered a legal battle, forcing the makers to move the Madras High Court, even as advance bookings had already opened in India and overseas markets.

The postponement reportedly caused significant financial losses for distributors, particularly in overseas territories. With thousands of shows scheduled and extensive advance bookings in place, exhibitors were forced to cancel screenings and initiate refunds at the last minute.
