Israeli PM offers rare honour to Indian pilot after mid-air rescue

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has invited Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar to join Prime Minister Narendra Modi in lighting the ceremonial flame at Israel’s forthcoming Independence Day celebrations.

During a telephone conversation with Machchhar, Netanyahu reportedly praised the Indian pilot for his courage during a mid-air emergency and described him as a hero of India, Israel and the wider world.

Netanyahu also wished Machchhar a full recovery and conveyed his regards to the pilot’s family. The invitation is considered particularly significant because the ceremonial flame is traditionally lit by Israeli citizens.

Machchhar is currently recovering in Abu Dhabi while receiving medical treatment. He is credited with displaying remarkable composure during an attack in the cockpit and helping save the lives of 174 passengers.

The invitation from Netanyahu marks an unusual international recognition for the pilot’s actions and comes as he continues his recovery.
